Obituary: Dr. Eberhard Haas

The university mourns the loss of Eberhard Haas, who passed away on March 27 in Bremen. Haas was an honorary citizen and sponsor of the University of Bremen since 2003.

Eberhard Haas graduated from high school in Bremen in 1953 and studied law and political science in London, Freiburg, and Bonn. He then went on to work as a lawyer and notary in Bremen. From 1980 to 1992, he was president of the Hanseatic Bar Association, and from 1991 to 1999, president of the Federal Bar Association.

Since the founding of the University of Bremen in 1971, Dr. Eberhard Haas was a member of the education and examination board for legal training and a long-standing member of the board of the “unifreunde” Association of the Friends of the University of Bremen. Since 1995, Eberhard Haas served as chairperson of the board of trustees of the “unifreunde” Association. The association aims to support academic research and teaching at universities in Bremen and to bring citizens, politicians, and the business community together with the scientific community in Bremen. “Through his advocacy on behalf of the “unifreunde,” Eberhard Haas made a significant contribution to anchoring the University of Bremen in the city,” said Professor Jutta Günther, President of the University of Bremen.
